SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WTAQ) - Sheboygan County will remain one of the few in Wisconsin without its own sales tax. The County Board voted 22 to 12 Tuesday night against a half-percent tax designed to offset cuts in state aid, maintain services, and reduce the county’s debt. The majority said Sheboygan County should cut spending instead of raising taxes during a recession. But supporters of the sales tax said spending cuts won’t be enough to cover an expected $4 million budget deficit for next year. The tax would have brought in about $9 million the first year, including almost $2 million from visitors. 9 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties still don’t have their own sales tax.
