Marquette Pulls Out Another

The Marquette Golden Eagles have had plenty of practice in tight games, knocking off #10 Villanova in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament 80-76 Thursday afternoon.  Darius Johnson-Odom scored a career high 24 and Lazar Hayward added 20 inlcuding a go ahead three in the waning minutes.   Marquette has played 20 games against conference opponents this year and 13 have been decided by 4 points or less.  The Golden Eagles meet Georgetown in the Big East semifinals in New York tonight.

Badgers, Phoenix See Tourney Action

Wisconsin opens play in the Big Ten tournament this afternoon in Indianapolis against Illinois.  The teams split in the regular season, each winning on the other's home floor.   The Green Bay Phoenix host Cleveland State in the Horizon League Womens Tournament semifinals at the Kress Center.  It's the second game of the semifinal doubleheader, Detroit and Butler meet at 5:30.

The Seymour Invite

The Seymour Thunder is back in the sectional final for the 9th time in the past 11 years after beating Bay Conference rival Shawano 56-30 in the Division 2 semfinals on Thursday night.  Cal Skogman drained five threes on his way to a 19 point night,  Phil Romback added 15.  The Thunder reeled off 8 straight sectional titles before missing the event two years ago.  Last season they were denied by Xavier in the final.  Seymour's all-time record at the Brown County Arena is ow 18-1.   Seymour will meet Kiel in Sataurday's title game.  The Raiders avenged two regular season losses to Eastern Wisconsin Conference champion Waupun by outlasting the Warriors 77-74.  Waupun senior Austin Armga put up 49 in the loss.  Kiel senior Brandon Gries had 29 inlcuding two clinching free throws with 9 seconds to play.

Girls Regionals Resume

Regional semifinal play in the girls state tournament on Thursday night had Notre Dame rout Oconto Falls 48-27, Luxemburg-Casco beat Little Chute 56-38, Denmark edged Seymour 43-42 on a three point basket from Stephanie Wiegman with :17 left.  Freedom also advanced with a 50-32 victory over Clintonville.  In Division 3, Manitowoc Roncalli defeated Algoma 47-44 and Brillion beat Kewaunee 42-31.  In Division 4, Marion ended NEW Lutheran's season 66-33.

Brewers Lose 2

A split squad day for the Milwaukee Brewers did not go well in Arizona as they dropped both games Thursday, 3-1 to Cincinnati and 7-3 to the Oakland A's.  In that game, starter Randy Wolf looked good, working three scoreless innings with 4 strikeouts and Ryan Braun hit his second home run of the spring.  The Brewers meet the Cubs in Maryvale today.
