DNA Shows 33 Positive Samples Of Asian Carp In Lake Michigan
CHICAGO, Ill. (WRN) - The Army Corps of Engineers says 33 positive DNA samples of the dangerous Asian carp went beyond an electronic barrier near Lake Michigan in Chicago. And experts say it’s just a matter of time before the over 50 pound carp gobble up native fish and their food on the Great Lakes, and harass small fishing boats. No one has actually seen Asian carp go beyond the electronic barrier in Chicago – but John Rogner of the Illinois DNR says they have to assume the fish are there. He says their DNA is the best evidence they have. Some of the carp are reportedly within 10 miles of the Lake Michigan shore – and beyond the barrier, only 2 navigational locks can stop them from entering the big lake. David Lodge of Notre Dame says no DNA tests have been done on Lake Michigan itself – and there’s still a reason to be optimistic the carp can be kept out. They were imported years ago by an Arkansas fish farmer. And after they escaped, they caused havoc on the Mississippi River.
