The Tea Party Litmus Test... Posted April 29, 2010 by Jerry Bader

As suspected, Florida Governor Charlie Christ will bolt the Republican party and make a third party run for U.S. Senate from Florida. Crist, once a shoe-in for the Republican nomination, now knows he has no chance against former State House Speaker Marco Rubio for the Republican nomination, who has surged ahead in the polls by running to Crist's right. This race will, as the Wall Street Journal points out, indeed become one of the most closely watched in the country.

The Republican party has great anxiety about the Tea Party Movement, fearing it will pull the party too far to the right. Some party leaders believe they now see their worst fears playing out in Florida; a hard right candidate earns the nomination, the centrist candidate runs third party and hands the seat to the Democrat. It may happen that way. Crist believes he can win a third party race. Or, Rubio could win it. Whatever happens this race is shaping up to be the litmus test for the clout of the Tea Party Movement and would long term impact it will have on American Politics.

Santa Clara Co. CA Bans Toys in Happy Meals Posted April 28, 2010 by Jerry Bader

Shared at the Jerry Bader Fan Page on Facebook by a listener. When I first saw the headline, I foolishly assumed there was concern about the safety of the toys. Well there is, sort of. These supervisors (a county board of just five supervisors?) are bothered by the fact the toy is used to entice children into eating unhealthy food. So the piece of junk that passes for a toy in a Happy Meal is a factor in childhood obesity? How about parents who refuse to say no when their kid begs for the toy or the food itself?

Why not just do what you REALLY want to do: ban the food? Consider this: they think the toy is used an enticement to get the kid to eat the food and they want to ban the enticement. Logic dictates that means they think it's bad for the kid to eat the food. Then why allow the food at all if it's a health hazard to children? Because it's classic liberal incrementalism; getting away with as much as you can, for now.

Neumann Campaign accused of Being Behind Phone Calls to GOP Delegates Posted April 27, 2010 by Jerry Bader

The Scott Walker for Governor Campaign tonight sent out emails to media accusing Walker's Primary opponent Mark Neumann's campaign of being responsible for deceptive calls to delegates to the upcoming Wisconsin state convention. Neumann Campaign Spokesman Chris Lato told the AP today the calls paid for by Neumann were nothing more than one in several attempts at voter outreach. The AP quotes Lato as saying "There's nothing nefarious about this."

But the Walker Campaign in its email tonight included the names of several delegates who said callers identified themselves as being from the Republican Party of Wisconsin and attempted to dissuade the delegates from endorsing a candidate at the upcoming convention in May. One of those delegates, Kathleen Kiernan is quoted as saying when she pressed the person who called her to say who they were representing, the caller hung up. Kiernan has filed a complaint with the Government Accountability Board. Other delegates quoted in the documents provided by the Walker campaign tell of similar calls.

I reached out tonight for comment from Lato and so far have not heard back. Those are the facts; here's the way it looks to me: Lato admitted the Neumann campaign is behind the calls, he says "there's nothing nefarious." Several delegates to the state convention tell a similar story; that the caller represented themself as being from the State Republican Party. This is obviously false. These delegates also say they were being discouraged from a candidate endorsement.

Earlier in this campaign the Neumann campaign also appeared to be spreading rumors that Walker was going to drop out of this race. Lato's denials rang hollow then, they ring hollow now. Of course, if Lato appears on my show tomorrow, as I requested in an email, or makes Neumann available to do so, we'll see if Chris can produce a more credible defense. Is he going to accuse the delegates of lying? Is he going to backtrack on his statement to the AP that the Neumann campaign paid for the calls?

As Walker consultant R.J. Johnson points out:

Only their two campaigns have received the Delegates Alternate list from the State Party...and only one ballot question was asked in the phone calls: who do you support for Governor? If the delegate indicated they supported Walker, the script then cited a St. Norbert poll that suggests the race is a dead heat, and then pushed them not to endorse at the convention.

If Lato is going to continue to insist this isn't "nefarious" is he going to deny this is the nature of the calls? Is he going to call several delegates liars? Is he going to now claim the Neumann campaign didn't pay for these calls? Let's hope Chris comes on the air to answer these questions or makes Mark Neumann available to address them himself. If neither happens, the silence will be deafening...

Mooch, Dungy, Say Favre Still Recovering, Not Ready to Commit to Season #20 Posted April 24, 2010 by Jerry Bader

His ankle is still puffy? It's been nearly three months and that ankle is that tender? Then it sounds like the speculation is probably right that the Super Bowl would have been his first missed start had the Viking's beat the Saints in the NFC Championship game.

It sounds like Dungy and Mooch are convinced that if he's healthy, he'll come back. No predictions here, but it sounds as though the beating was pretty severe. I was stunned at what the Saints were doing to him; I felt there were two or three roughing the passer calls that were missed. If Favre does come back, we'll see if defensive coordinators around the league pick up on what the Saints discovered; the way to stop the Vikings is to mercilessly pound Favre. One has to wonder if Favre is thinking about that too...

Toby Gerhart Goes to the Vikings Posted April 24, 2010 by Jerry Bader

If you're reaction to the title of this post was "who is Toby Gerhart?" you probably don't follow college football. Gerhart was a standout running back at Stanford. One of the things that makes him stand out, besides his ability, is the fact he's a white featured back. If you look around the NFL, you won't find any white featured backs.

Gerhart argued he should be a first round pick, based on ability. He knew he wouldn't be and he says it's because he's white. Interestingly, he was drafted in the 2nd round, no. 51 overall, by the Minnesota Vikings. That's interesting becausee the Vikings, of course, have all world running back Adrian Peterson. White, black or orange, no rookie RB is going to take much playing time from Peterson.

This could be a great pick for the Vikings though; Peterson's presence on the roster gives them an excuse not to give Gerhart a legitimate shot at being the featured back. But...if he shows enough in any limited playing time he does get to illustrate he does deserve to be a featured back, the Viking's could parlay a late 2nd round pick into a first round pick via trade, if it becomes clear Gerhart is a first rate back sitting on the bench of the Metrodome. And if Gerhart is the real deal, Minnesota was one of the few places in the NFL where a team could keep him 2nd string and not face cries of racism. Funny how things work out, isn't it?
